Unforgiving Tech

Everything works too easily now. You press a glass screen, a file appears, and nobody has to think about it. It’s boring.

Back in the 90s, getting a computer to do anything basic was a real pain sometimes. Half the time the computer won.

Here are a few bits of hardware from that era that proved technology used to hate us.

1x Speed CD Writers

Burning a CD took 74 minutes. That was 74 minutes of sitting completely still in your chair, praying Windows didn’t decide to do anything in the background. If a tooltip popped up or you accidentally moved the mouse too fast, you got a buffer underrun.

The laser stopped, the disc was ruined, and you were down £5. I had a stack of silver coasters almost to the ceiling. Verbatim brand always seemed to work better for me for some reason!

IRQ Conflicts

Plugging something in today takes two seconds. In 1995, putting a new sound card into a motherboard meant opening up the case and messing around with tiny plastic jumpers.

If your sound card wanted IRQ 5 and your printer was already using it, the whole PC just crashed. You’d spend three hours staring at CONFIG.SYS in DOS, changing numbers at random, just trying to get a game to make a noise when you fired a gun.

14.4k Modems and the Landline

The dial-up noise was bad enough, but waiting twenty minutes for a single image to load line-by-line was normal.

The real problem was the landline. You could be 90% through downloading a file that took two hours, and someone downstairs would lift the phone off the hook to make a call. Connection dropped instantly. No download manager. No resume. Just start again tomorrow. Ugh.

MiniDiscs and SCSI Cables

MiniDiscs were actually great. Tiny plastic squares that felt heavy and solid. I still really want to buy one. I used to love my old one. I used to record onto it and then listen while i was riding round the countryside.

SCSI cables, on the other hand, were a nightmare. If you wanted to run a scanner and a hard drive together, you needed SCSI IDs and termination blocks on the end of the cable. Get one jumper wrong and the computer pretended neither device existed.

Tech is better now, obviously. But there was a weird satisfaction in spending an entire afternoon fixing a jumper setting and finally hearing a Sound Blaster card work. You felt like you’d actually accomplished something.

So now two things on the list.
1. Cat
2. Mini disc recorder

Deep fake

Has anyone ever used this or witnessed a video of it being used? I was always curious about it when traveling around the Tor network (dark web). It’s an odd kind of place, like the internet with layers. It can have some amazing content and some of the sickest as well.

What is it?

A deep fake is a type of synthetic media in which a person in an existing image or video is replaced with someone else’s likeness. This can be done using artificial intelligence to manipulate the image or video in a way that makes it look like the person in the original media is actually the person in the new media.

Deepfakes can be used for a variety of purposes, both good and bad. For example, they can be used to create realistic and convincing videos of politicians saying or doing things they never actually said or did. This could be used to damage someone’s reputation or to spread misinformation.

Deepfakes can also be used for more positive purposes, such as creating educational content or entertainment. For example, a deepfake could be used to create a video of a historical figure giving a speech or to create a new movie starring a deceased actor.

The potential for deepfakes to be used for malicious purposes is a serious concern. However, there are also several ways to detect deepfakes, and the technology is constantly evolving. As deepfakes become more sophisticated, it is important to be aware of the risks and to be critical of the information we see online.

You can find it online in quite a few places now, it used to be in Tor, and probably still is. I was just curious if anyone ever used it and what they thought of it. When I encountered deep fake it was early days.

Thank you random brain for that one.

It worked

The method of trying to banish the sleep demon was unorthodox but it served its purpose. I couldn’t see the words on the screen anymore as I was that tired. It was around 5am, and I managed to secure a spot on the sofa with a few bribes for the dogs. I fell asleep instantly. It was AMAZING. No thoughts, no rolling around listening to people condemning you. It was bliss. I was up at 7am to walk the dogs and here I am now. Tired but not defeated. Hopefully, it’s enough to break the cycle. Although I’m still worried it won’t be enough.

R my daughter is coming to visit today, D has taken her and B to the circus since, for reasons unknown to me, I cannot drive them without supervision and we can’t leave Dobby the newbie on her own for very long. So D will bring R here and I can see her and annoy her. Still a far cry from the contact center I used to see her.

I should do a ‘Bizarre things that only happen to me’ list at some point.

I’m now messing with the Google Bard bot. So far he has been so useful in looking up and getting it summarised. Also interesting to see what the limitations are. For example, trying to get Bard to access my emails and search it for me was a failure due to privacy but if I told Bard my name he would remember it the next time we spoke. Thought that was pretty cool. It can also write blog posts but they come across as too clean if you get me. I’ll keep experimenting with it. Although as a programmer, I’m worried that it can auto-complete code. If that develops a lot of us will be out of work pretty fast. Or the market will become saturated as less skill is required to do it. Blah.

I’ll leave you with this awesome, flattering photo of Dobby the dog.

Have a good day!

“Two possibilities exist: either we are alone in the Universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying.”

So, which is it? Are we alone in the universe, or are we not? Both possibilities are equally terrifying.

Always loved this quote. Something about it just resonates in my head. I look forward to the day, probably my son’s generation, when they will hear a bloop on a satellite somewhere indicating an intelligent signal. It’s simply not possible to believe in a world other than our own in the vast expanse of the Universe. I think my generation will be long gone before that happens. Nice to think it wouldn’t. Like flying cars. We were promised flying cars by now and that hasn’t happened so there is not much hope for us!

My BPD is playing up today. I had lots of plans and little plans to accomplish but I couldn’t seem to get my feet off the ground to do it. I’ve managed to have an existential crisis, tidy the lounge & kitchen, take delivery & put away all the food shopping and that’s where it ends. It’s not a case of sitting on the sofa power scrolling my way through FB but a gentle sob with a tear in my eye trying to stop thinking.

This is a dangerous area for me. When this starts to happen I need to catch it fast, trap it, and then deep space launch it to the sun. Stopping thinking, personally, is the hardest part of this condition. You just simply cannot shut the voices up. I’m trying the counting method which I explained before but it’s like there are levels in my head where I think of different things. I count, then I hear a voice whilst still counting so I start a new count at the opposite pace of the first count and then another voice and I get THE biggest headache trying to cover that with this and so on. It’s led me to a dark place where I want to just crack open a few pills, rum, lots of rum, and numb everything. I know I’m supposed to take valium when this happens but I hate the stuff because I need a large dose which causes a hangover the next day.

I just need to take my mind off things for a while. But this happened five days ago. I hate the rapid cycles. It’ll probably be mostly gone by the evening and I’ll be back to my cheery self. But what if it’s not? so the cycle continues.

So, the plan for today will be to take the dogs on their afternoon walk, get dog food for them on the way to get the kids, get the kids, and then slink back into the darkness and safety of the house. How about you guys, many wild plans for today?
