Sneak Peek: The £200 Quest to Relive a 1990s Memory

Spotify is great and all, but streaming a track through phone speakers just doesn’t hit the same as physical media.

I’ve been obsessing over a very specific, vivid memory lately: being stuck on a grueling 17-hour coach ride home from a college trip to Euro Disney in the late 90s. While everyone else was miserable, I was completely phased out of reality, lying back in my seat listening to Blur’s 1997 self-titled album on a portable MiniDisc recorder.

Specifically, the track “On Your Own”. Whenever that song plays, I completely dissolve into the music. It gives me this overwhelming feeling of being totally free.

Sure, I can open Spotify right now and play it in two seconds. But I don’t want an algorithm. I want the original experience—the mechanical clack of sliding a physical MiniDisc into the drive, the lit-up LCD screen, and crackling retro headphones.

So, I’m launching a mini-quest: I’m going to hunt down a decent MiniDisc recorder and an original copy of Blur’s album on disc. Prices on eBay are currently hovering around £200, which is steep, but I’m setting up alerts and keeping an eye out.

I also need to save up for it all!

Coming Soon on the blog: The full hunt, the setup, and whether listening to “On Your Own” on retro hardware lives up to the 20-year-old memory in my head (or if I just cry tears of joy).

Question for the comments: What is one song or album that completely takes you back to a specific moment in time? Drop it below!

Short Story: About old times

I remember the 90s like it was yesterday. It was a simpler time, when life was all about hanging out with friends, playing video games, and listening to our favorite bands.

We didn’t have smartphones or social media, so we had to actually talk to each other in person. We would spend hours playing outside, riding our bikes, or just exploring our neighborhoods.

We didn’t have a lot of money, but we didn’t need it. We were happy just being together and having fun.

Some of my favorite memories from the 90s are of watching movies with my friends, going to the arcade, and listening to my favorite bands on cassette tape. I also loved playing video games like Mario Kart and The Legend of Zelda.

The 90s were a great time to be a kid. We were carefree and innocent, and we didn’t have a care in the world. We just lived in the moment and enjoyed each other’s company.

I’m so glad I got to experience the 90s. It was a time of innocence and wonder, and I’ll never forget it.

Describe something you learned in high school.

That no one pays attention to you if you stay out of the way.

Well not out of the way, but under the radar. See, I went from popular kid in primary school to popular kid till I was like 13, then the drinking started and then I went to loner. Well. One or two friends and some acquaintances. By being under the radar it allowed me to leave school whenever I wanted. In retrospect I would have done things so differently. I guess that is probably true for everyone. I learned that teachers can hold grudges against you. I learned that because my brother (Dickhead) was bad at school that the teachers automatically assumed I would be and gave me poor grades.

I also learned, looking back, that when the teacher was in tears telling me off it was probably because she was having a bad day or something in her personal life went wrong. I didn’t know that at the time. Its a memory that has stuck with me. Especially now with D training to become a teacher. I can see the level of stress involved in planning and running a lesson. I wish I just didn’t give the teacher a hard time. It was Welsh class.

I learned that you could bypass the security software on the computers so you could access anything you wanted online. This was back in the 90s.

How about you guys?
